Route notes
Why this routing works
The backbone of this routing is Ethiopian Airlines through Addis Ababa (ADD). For travelers departing Istanbul, Turkish Airlines flies IST-JRO direct — bypassing the need for a European connection — making this one of the most efficient East Africa entry points from the Middle East. The ADD hub then handles the Africa-to-Africa connection from Kilimanjaro to Victoria Falls, with Ethiopian Airlines operating VFA as a direct international destination from Addis Ababa.
After Johannesburg (JNB), the routing pivots north to Frankfurt via Lufthansa, the Star Alliance transatlantic hub. FRA connects to Austin through United hubs — most commonly IAH or ORD — before the routing continues west to San Francisco. The FRA-AUS-SFO sequence allows two substantive US stops without backtracking, since SFO is positioned as the transpacific departure point rather than an east coast gateway.
The SFO-SIN transpacific leg (~17h on United or Singapore Airlines) is the longest single flight on this itinerary. From Changi, a short hop to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) completes the Southeast Asia segment, with Turkish Airlines operating the SGN-IST direct return (~13h). This closing leg is one of the best-value long-haul return flights available from Southeast Asia — direct service to Istanbul without a hub connection.
