Key facts about this carrier

Air Greenland (GL) is Greenland's national airline, operating domestic and international flights from Kangerlussuaq and Nuuk to Denmark and Iceland.

  • Government-owned flag carrier and sole domestic airline in Greenland, independent of any alliance.
  • Hubs at Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) and Nuuk (GOH) with service to Copenhagen and Reykjavik.
  • Mixed fleet including Airbus A330 for transatlantic and Dash 8 turboprops for domestic routes.
  • Essential for reaching Greenland; available via GDS and useful for Arctic stopovers on multi-stop trips.

Why this tier

Greenland's sole carrier operating 28 aircraft including a single A330-800 for transatlantic service, plus DHC-8 turboprops and 18 helicopters for remote domestic routes. A new Nuuk Airport runway expansion completed in 2024 and a planned A320neo delivery in 2027 signal growth toward London and Germany service.

Strengths

  • Monopoly carrier providing essential connectivity to remote Greenland communities
  • New Nuuk Airport runway expansion completed in 2024 enabling jet operations
  • Expanding international network with second year-round Copenhagen route launching October 2026 from Ilulissat

Watch-outs

  • Extremely small fleet (28 aircraft) with heavy reliance on a single A330-800 for all transatlantic flights
  • Limited international network - currently only serves Denmark, Iceland, and Canada
  • Weather-dependent operations in Arctic conditions can cause significant disruptions

Best used for

  • Short regional hops

Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Primary hubs at Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) and Nuuk (GOH). SFJ has historically been the main international gateway due to its long runway. Nuuk airport (GOH) is being expanded with a new runway expected to enable direct jet service from Europe by 2026. Also operates from Ilulissat (JAV). International routes to Copenhagen (CPH) and, seasonally, Reykjavik (KEF). Domestic network connects remote Greenlandic settlements via helicopter and DHC-8.

Baggage

Baggage checks through on Air Greenland itineraries including domestic helicopter and fixed-wing connections within Greenland. Interline agreement with SAS for CPH connections. On SAS-ticketed itineraries via CPH, bags can check through to/from Greenland. Weight limits on domestic Greenland flights may be stricter (often 20kg) due to small aircraft.

Terminal Notes

SFJ: Small terminal, basic facilities. The airport is a former US military base, remote from any town (shuttle bus to Kangerlussuaq settlement). GOH: Small terminal, currently limited to turboprop operations. CPH: Terminal 3. Greenlandic airports have very limited amenities. No lounges at most Greenland airports.

Operational Notes

Fleet includes A330neo (CPH-SFJ), DHC-8/Dash 8 (domestic), and Sikorsky S-61 helicopters (settlement routes). Weather delays are frequent and should be expected, especially October through April. Arctic conditions can ground flights for days. Build buffer days into any Greenland itinerary. Available in GDS for international routes. Domestic Greenland routes often require booking through Air Greenland directly. Sole scheduled carrier serving most Greenlandic communities. Government-owned (Government of Greenland).
