Hub and Connections

Hub at Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB). Formerly a South African Airways (SAA) franchise, now fully independent since 2020. Extensive Southern African regional network: connects JNB to secondary cities in South Africa (BFN, GRJ, ELS, KIM, PLZ, HDS, MQP), plus regional destinations (WDH, VFA, LVI, MTS, MPM, HRE, BUQ, TBZ, LLW, MRU, SEZ, VNX). Codeshare with Emirates, Qatar Airways, British Airways, and others. Interline agreements with many global carriers at JNB.

Baggage and Interline

Interline baggage agreements with Emirates (EK), Qatar (QR), British Airways (BA), KLM (KL), and others. Bags check through at JNB for interline connections. This is a key strength since Airlink connects many secondary Southern African airports to JNB where passengers connect to long-haul flights. Weight-based baggage system on most routes. Some bush strip destinations have strict 20kg limits.

Terminal Notes

At JNB, operates from Terminal B (domestic) and Terminal A (international/regional). JNB Terminal B to international terminal transfer requires clearing security again and walking between terminals (allow 2+ hours for interline connections). CPT operations from domestic terminal. Many secondary Southern African airports are small, single-terminal facilities. Airlink provides lounge access for Club passengers at JNB.

Operational Notes

Fleet includes E190, E170, and ERJ 135/140. Largest regional airline in Southern Africa. Bookable through GDS. Critical for connecting small communities to JNB hub. Some routes are government-subsidized. Operates into challenging airstrips in places like St Helena (HLE), Mata Mata, and Vilankulo. Weather and visibility can affect operations at bush airstrips. Flexible rebooking policies on most fares.
