Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Primary hub is Bogota (BOG). Secondary hub at San Salvador (SAL) via merger with TACA. Star Alliance member. Minimum connection time at BOG is 90 minutes. Strong network across Central America, South America, and key US/European routes. BOG's high altitude (2,640m) means some weight restrictions on departures.

Baggage

Piece-based system. Full Star Alliance interline baggage agreements. Bags check through on Star Alliance connections. Basic fares (XS) include carry-on only. Baggage fees for checked bags vary by route. LifeMiles status can provide extra baggage allowance.

Terminal Notes

BOG El Dorado has two terminals. Avianca operates from Terminal 1 (Puente Aereo for domestic shuttles and main terminal for international). Avianca VIP Lounges at BOG, SAL, and other key stations. BOG terminal can be congested during peak hours. Immigration lines for international arrivals can be lengthy.

Operational Issues

Emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021. Fleet modernized with A320neo family and 787 Dreamliners. BOG weather (fog, low clouds) causes regular delays, especially mornings. High-altitude operations mean reduced payload on some routes. Avianca has improved punctuality significantly post-restructuring. Central American routes via SAL provide good coverage.
