Hub and Connections
Primary hub: London Heathrow (LHR), operating from Terminals 3 and 5. Secondary base at London Gatwick (LGW) for leisure routes. Minimum connection time at LHR T5 is 60 minutes domestic-to-domestic, 90 minutes international-to-international. T3 connections to T5 require 90 minutes minimum. BA operates the largest short-haul network from LHR, feeding long-haul connections. Strong Oneworld partner presence at LHR with AA, IB, CX, QF, and JL.
Baggage
Bags check through on all Oneworld itineraries via LHR. BA and AA have a joint business agreement across the Atlantic, so bags transfer seamlessly between the two carriers. LHR T5 has automated baggage handling. Connections through LGW require recollection if transferring to a different terminal or carrier. BA does not interline bags with most low-cost carriers.
Terminal Notes
LHR Terminal 5 is the main BA terminal for long-haul and most short-haul flights. Some short-haul and partner flights depart from Terminal 3. T5 has multiple BA lounges including the Concorde Room (First), Galleries First, and Galleries Club. JFK Terminal 7 was the long-standing BA terminal but operations moved to Terminal 8 (shared with AA) in 2022. BA uses T5 at ORD.
Operational Issues
LHR slot constraints mean delays cascade quickly, especially during morning and evening peaks. Fog at LHR in autumn/winter causes significant disruption. BA has experienced periodic IT system outages affecting check-in and boarding. Summer ATC strikes in European airspace (France in particular) cause widespread delays to short-haul services. Gatwick operations are more cancellation-prone during irregular operations.
