Key facts about this carrier

Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong's flag carrier and a founding Oneworld member, known for premium service on Asia-to-world long-haul routes via HKG.

  • Hong Kong flag carrier operating from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).
  • Founding member of the Oneworld alliance.
  • Consistently top-rated business class product.
  • Key connecting hub for travel between Asia, Australasia, and the West.
  • Strong cargo operation alongside passenger services.

Why this tier

Cathay Pacific is a oneworld member airline based at Hong Kong International (HKG), serving 81 international destinations across 31 countries as of 2026. Ranked 3rd globally at the 2025 Skytrax World Airline Awards, CX is mid-rollout of its Aria Suite business class (1-2-1, door suites, 24-inch 4K screens) on 777-300ERs, with 14 aircraft retrofitted and full fleet conversion expected by end of 2027. The carrier has committed over HK$100 billion in fleet modernization through the early 2030s, including 35 Boeing 777-9 orders, and expanded its US network to seven gateways including Seattle (launched March 2026).

Strengths

  • Skytrax 2025: ranked 3rd best airline globally, won Best Economy Class (second consecutive year) and Best Inflight Entertainment
  • AirlineRatings 2026: named 2nd best full-service airline, won Best Business Class (Aria Suite) and Best Airline Lounges
  • Aria Suite business class on 777-300ERs features 1-2-1 layout with privacy doors, 24-inch 4K screens, wireless charging, Bluetooth audio, and Bamford bedding - now flying HKG to SFO, LAX, LHR, FRA, MXP, SYD, MEL, NRT, YVR
  • Fleet average age of 8.2 years vs. 11.5-year industry average; HK$100B+ modernization program includes 35 777-9s on order
  • 100+ combined destinations (Cathay Pacific plus HK Express) with dense intra-Asia connectivity through Hong Kong hub
  • Strong cargo operation - Cathay Cargo named world's best cargo operator by Air Transport World in 2025

Watch-outs

  • Hong Kong hub concentration means all routing flows through HKG - no secondary hub fallback, and typhoon season (May-November) can cascade delays across the network
  • Customer service pain points persist: Trustpilot rating of 1.6/5, with reports of long hold times, disconnected calls, and minimal ground support during irregular operations
  • Aria Suite rollout is gradual - only 14 of 70+ widebodies retrofitted as of early 2026 - so most long-haul flights still operate older reverse-herringbone product
  • No direct coverage of Africa, South America, or the Middle East - relies entirely on oneworld partners (Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc) for those regions

Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Primary hub: Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). Minimum connection time is 60 minutes for international-to-international. HKG is a major transit hub connecting Southeast Asia, mainland China, and Australasia with long-haul flights to Europe and North America. CX operates a shuttle service to Taipei (TPE) and high-frequency routes to key Asian cities. Regional subsidiary Cathay Regional (formerly Cathay Dragon) feeds the hub from mainland Chinese and regional Asian cities.

Baggage

CX uses weight-based baggage allowances, not piece-based (except on US/Canada routes which are piece-based). Bags check through on all Oneworld connections via HKG. CX has strong interline agreements with Oneworld partners including QF, JL, BA, and AA. On flights to/from the US, the piece concept applies with 2x23kg in economy.

Terminal Notes

HKG Terminal 1 is the primary terminal. CX operates several premium lounges: The Pier (Business and First), The Wing (Business and First), The Bridge, and The Deck. The Pier First Class lounge is considered one of the best in the world. Automated transit system connects gates within T1. CX operates from Terminal 1 at most outstations.

Operational Issues

Typhoon season (June through November) can cause flight cancellations and diversions at HKG. When Typhoon Signal 8 is raised, airport operations are significantly disrupted. HKG has two runways but handles heavy traffic, leading to ATC delays during peak hours. CX rebuilt its network post-COVID and most pre-pandemic routes have been restored. Thick fog occasionally affects HKG in spring months.
