Hub and Connections
PVG (Shanghai Pudong) is the primary international hub. SHA (Shanghai Hongqiao) handles domestic flights. Secondary hubs at KMG (Kunming) and XIY (Xi'an). MCT at PVG is 120 minutes for international connections due to immigration and terminal transfer times. Domestic connections at SHA require ground transfer from PVG (approximately 90 minutes by shuttle). SkyTeam partners present at PVG T1.
Baggage
Bags check through on SkyTeam partner tickets. Domestic Chinese flights use weight concept (20kg economy). International flights use piece concept on Americas routes. Reclaim and recheck required when transferring between PVG and SHA. Interline agreements with SkyTeam members.
Terminal Notes
PVG Terminal 1 for international China Eastern and SkyTeam flights. PVG T2 for some domestic. SHA Terminal 2 for domestic flights. No airside connection between PVG terminals easily. China Eastern lounges at PVG T1 and SHA T2. PVG immigration queues can be very long.
Operational Notes
PVG experiences frequent delays due to air traffic congestion, military airspace restrictions, and summer thunderstorms. On-time performance is among the lower tier for major Asian carriers. Typhoons can disrupt schedules July through September. Winter fog at SHA causes domestic disruptions. ATC flow control delays are common throughout the Chinese domestic network.
