Key facts about this carrier

EgyptAir (MS) is Africa's oldest airline and a Star Alliance member, operating from Cairo as a gateway between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

  • Star Alliance member with hub at Cairo (CAI)
  • Cairo hub provides connections between Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa
  • Useful for routing to Egypt, Jordan, and the broader Levant region
  • Fleet modernization with Boeing 787 Dreamliners on key long-haul routes
  • Competitive pricing on transatlantic routes via Cairo

Why this tier

Africa's oldest airline and the first Arab carrier to join Star Alliance (2009), operating approximately 69 aircraft including newly delivered A350-900s (first arrived February 2026) and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The airline is adding Los Angeles to its network in 2026 and relocating JFK operations to the new Terminal One.

Strengths

  • Star Alliance member since 2009 with widebody routes to New York, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Toronto, Beijing, and Bangkok
  • First A350-900 delivered February 2026 - launch operator of the type in North Africa, with 16 on order through 2033
  • Cairo hub provides geographic gateway connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East

Watch-outs

  • Aging Boeing 737-800 narrowbody fleet awaiting replacement by 18 ordered 737 MAX 8s
  • Service quality reviews are mixed, with inconsistent cabin crew and catering standards
  • On-time performance data not prominently tracked - hub congestion at Cairo can cause delays

Best used for

  • Middle East hub
  • Europe–Asia long-haul

Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Hub at Cairo (CAI). Minimum connection 90 minutes international. CAI connects North Africa and the Middle East with Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. EgyptAir has good coverage across North Africa, the Levant, and Gulf. Star Alliance partner connections available but the connecting experience at CAI is less polished than major European or Asian hubs.

Baggage

Bags check through on Star Alliance itineraries. Generous 2x23kg economy allowance on long-haul routes. CAI baggage handling can be inconsistent. Wrapping luggage is recommended for checked bags transiting CAI. Interline agreements with Star Alliance members.

Terminal Notes

CAI Terminal 3 for EgyptAir and Star Alliance partners. Terminal 3 is the newest terminal but showing wear. EgyptAir Lounge (Oasis) available for business class and Star Alliance Gold. Terminal 2 handles some domestic and charter flights. Terminals are not connected airside so allow extra time if re-routing between terminals.

Operational Issues

CAI operations can be unpredictable with delays due to air traffic management and airport congestion. Desert sand and dust storms occasionally affect operations. Fleet is a mix of 787s, A330s, and older 737-800s. Some regional routes use EgyptAir Express with smaller aircraft. Security procedures at CAI can add extra time for connections.
