Hub and Connections
Primary hub is Abu Dhabi (AUH), Terminal A (Zayed International Airport terminal opened 2023). Minimum connection time is 60 minutes. Etihad is independent but partners with many airlines. Key codeshares with Air France-KLM, Virgin Australia, Korean Air, and ANA. Smaller network than Emirates but strong Europe/Asia connections via AUH.
Baggage
Piece-based system on most routes. Bags check through on Etihad connections and codeshare partners. Interline agreements with many carriers. No alliance membership means interline agreements are bilateral. Golf bags and some sports equipment carried free in Business/First.
Terminal Notes
Terminal A at AUH is the primary terminal for Etihad. Modern facility with premium lounges including the First Class Lounge and Spa. US pre-clearance facility at AUH allows passengers to clear US customs/immigration before departure, arriving as domestic passengers in the US. This is a significant advantage for US-bound itineraries.
Operational Issues
Smaller operation than Emirates, so schedule frequency is lower on many routes. AUH is less congested than DXB, resulting in fewer delays. Etihad scaled back significantly after 2017 equity alliance losses. Network has been rebuilding steadily. Some seasonal routes operate only during peak periods.
