Hub and Connections
Primary hub: Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL). HEL's geographic position makes it the shortest routing between Europe and Northeast Asia. Minimum connection time at HEL is 35 minutes (one of the fastest in Europe). AY focuses on connecting European cities to Asian destinations (Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Delhi). Compact terminal layout at HEL keeps transfer times short. AY has a joint business with BA and IB on European routes and with JL on Helsinki-Tokyo.
Baggage
Bags check through on Oneworld connections via HEL. AY is part of the Oneworld interline baggage system. Economy Light fares do not include checked baggage. HEL baggage handling is reliable and fast. Connections at HEL rarely have bag mishandling issues due to the compact airport layout.
Terminal Notes
HEL has two terminals (T1 and T2) connected airside. AY operates from both but primarily T2 for long-haul. Finnair Premium Lounge in T2 with sauna (a uniquely Finnish feature). Schengen and non-Schengen areas are well separated. HEL is modern with free WiFi, rest areas, and efficient security. Non-Schengen transfers do not require passing through immigration when staying airside.
