Why this tier

Iberia is the dominant carrier between Europe and Latin America, operating from its Madrid-Barajas hub to 140+ destinations across 46 territories. The airline achieved 83.52% on-time performance across 188,447 flights in 2025, ranking 4th in Europe and 6th worldwide for punctuality. Its A321XLR fleet (global launch customer) is opening new thin long-haul routes to secondary cities in the Americas.

Strengths

  • Global launch airline for the Airbus A321XLR, with 8 units enabling new routes like Madrid-Recife and Madrid-Newark

Watch-outs

Hub and Connections

Primary hub: Madrid Barajas (MAD), Terminal 4 and T4S satellite. MAD is the main gateway between Europe and Latin America. Minimum connection time is 45 minutes within T4/T4S, 90 minutes if connecting between T4 and other terminals. IB dominates the Madrid-Latin America market with extensive service to Central and South America. Barcelona (BCN) is a secondary base. IB is part of IAG group with BA, and they have a strong transatlantic joint business with AA and BA.

Baggage

Bags check through on Oneworld and IAG partner itineraries. IB Basic fares do not include checked baggage on short/medium-haul. IB and BA interline seamlessly as IAG siblings. Connections between IB and BA at LHR require bag recheck if on separate tickets. Latin American interline connections via MAD work well with LATAM (Oneworld affiliate).

Terminal Notes

MAD Terminal 4 and T4S (satellite, connected by automated people mover). T4S handles long-haul and non-Schengen flights. IB operates Iberia Premium Lounges (Sala VIP) at MAD T4/T4S. The Dali VIP Lounge in T4S is the premium offering. AA, BA, and other Oneworld partners co-locate in T4/T4S. Iberia Express (short-haul subsidiary) also operates from T4.

Operational Issues

MAD has good weather year-round with minimal fog or snow disruption. Spanish ATC strikes occasionally cause delays but are less frequent than French ATC actions. IB historically had punctuality issues but has improved significantly. Iberia Express operates the short-haul network and uses different service standards than mainline IB. Summer peak season (June through September) sees heavy loads on Latin American routes.
