Operational notes
Hub and Connections
Primary hubs: Tokyo Narita (NRT) for international long-haul and Tokyo Haneda (HND) for domestic and select international routes. HND is closer to central Tokyo (30 min vs 90 min for NRT). JL has expanded international service from HND significantly. Minimum connection time at NRT is 60 minutes, at HND 75 minutes for international-to-domestic. Osaka Kansai (KIX) is a secondary international gateway. JL and AA have a transpacific joint business.
Baggage
Piece-based system: 2 pieces at 23kg each in economy on international flights. Domestic flights allow 20kg total. Bags check through on Oneworld itineraries. NRT-HND transfers require collecting and rechecking bags as these are separate airports (allow 3+ hours minimum). JL domestic connections at HND are seamless when staying within the same terminal.
Terminal Notes
NRT: Terminal 2 for JL international flights. HND: Terminal 1 for domestic, Terminal 3 for international. JL operates Sakura Lounges at both NRT and HND, plus a First Class Lounge at NRT T2. Oneworld partner flights at NRT are split between T1 (AA, some partners) and T2 (JL), requiring an inter-terminal bus for connections. HND T3 is modern with excellent facilities.
Operational Issues
Typhoon season (August through October) can disrupt flights at NRT, HND, and KIX. NRT occasionally closes during heavy snow in winter. JL has excellent on-time performance by global standards. Golden Week (late April/early May), Obon (mid-August), and New Year are peak travel periods with full flights and limited rebooking options. Earthquakes occasionally affect operations but recovery is typically fast.
