Key facts about this carrier

Korean Air (KE) is South Korea's flag carrier and a SkyTeam co-founder, operating a major transpacific and intra-Asia network from Seoul Incheon.

  • SkyTeam co-founding member with a hub at Seoul Incheon (ICN), a top Asian transit airport.
  • Completed acquisition of Asiana Airlines, consolidating South Korea's two largest carriers.
  • Operates one of Asia's largest long-haul fleets with strong transpacific coverage.
  • Known for premium cabin products, particularly its business class on Boeing 787 and A380 aircraft.

Why this tier

Korean Air is South Korea's flag carrier operating 164 aircraft from Seoul Incheon, with on-time performance improving to 82% in Q1 2026. The airline completed its acquisition of Asiana Airlines in December 2024 for 1.5 trillion won, and the full brand merger is targeted for December 2026, which will create Asia's largest combined carrier within SkyTeam. Its new Prestige Suites 2.0 business class features 1-2-1 layout with sliding doors and 24-inch 4K screens.

Strengths

  • Asiana acquisition creates a mega-carrier with combined fleet of 250+ aircraft and dominant Seoul Incheon position
  • New Prestige Suites 2.0 on 787-10 - 1-2-1 reverse herringbone with 78-inch flat bed and 24-inch 4K monitors
  • Expanding 2026 network to Brisbane, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Auckland, Istanbul, Madrid, and Vienna
  • 33 Airbus A350s on order (6 A350-900, 27 A350-1000) for next-generation long-haul operations
  • SkyTeam co-founder with deep partnerships across Delta, Air France-KLM, and China Eastern

Watch-outs

  • Asiana integration risk - full brand merger not complete until late 2026/early 2027, creating operational complexity
  • Prestige Suites 2.0 only on 787-10 (Seattle and Vancouver routes) - most long-haul flights still have older product
  • Star Alliance partners lose Asiana codeshares post-merger, potentially reducing connecting traffic

Best used for

  • Intra-Asia connections
  • Transpacific
  • Europe–Asia long-haul
  • Business class RTW

Operational notes

Hub and Connections

ICN (Incheon) is the primary hub with excellent connection infrastructure. MCT is 70 minutes for international-to-international. GMP (Gimpo) handles domestic and some short-haul Northeast Asian routes (Tokyo HND, Shanghai, Beijing). ICN serves as a key transit point for traffic between the Americas and Southeast/South Asia. Strong SkyTeam partner connections at ICN T2.

Baggage

Bags check through on SkyTeam connections. Americas routes get 2 free checked bags in economy. Routes to/from Asia and Europe get 1 checked bag in economy. Interline agreements with all SkyTeam members. The Korean Air-Asiana merger (completed 2024) means unified baggage handling across both carriers.

Terminal Notes

Korean Air operates from ICN Terminal 2, shared with SkyTeam partners (Delta, Air France, KLM, etc.). Terminal 2 is newer and less congested than Terminal 1. Korean Air prestige lounges at T2. Transfer between T1 and T2 requires shuttle train (about 15 minutes). GMP domestic terminal is separate.

Operational Notes

Typhoon season (July through October) can disrupt flights to Southeast Asian and Japanese destinations. ICN rarely closes due to weather. Korean Air has strong on-time performance. The Asiana integration is ongoing. Some seasonal routes to leisure destinations in summer only.
