Hub and Connections
Primary hubs at Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). FRA minimum connection 45 minutes intra-Schengen, 60 minutes international. MUC minimum connection 40 minutes Schengen, 55 minutes international. FRA is the larger hub with more long-haul options. Both hubs offer extensive European feeder network. Lufthansa Group includes SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines with seamless connections.
Baggage
Bags check through on Star Alliance and Lufthansa Group itineraries. Economy Light fares have no checked bag included. FRA baggage handling has historically been a weak point, with higher mishandling rates than MUC. Interline agreements with all major alliance partners. Lufthansa Group carriers (LX, OS, SN) treated as single carrier for baggage purposes.
Terminal Notes
FRA Terminal 1 for Lufthansa and Star Alliance. Terminal 1 has areas A, B, C, and Z. Long-haul typically departs from A/B gates. Senator and Business Lounges throughout Terminal 1. First Class Terminal is a standalone building at FRA with private car transfer to aircraft. MUC Terminal 2 is Lufthansa's dedicated satellite terminal, well-designed for connections. MUC Satellite Terminal requires automated train from main T2.
Operational Issues
FRA frequently affected by fog in autumn/winter causing delays and diversions. German air traffic control staffing shortages cause recurring ATC delays across FRA and MUC. Lufthansa ground staff and pilot strikes have occurred periodically, sometimes with short notice. FRA is capacity-constrained and afternoon slot congestion causes routine 15-30 minute delays.
