Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Primary hub: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), operating from KLIA Terminal 1. Minimum connection time is 60 minutes. MH serves Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Australasia, and London. KUL is geographically central in Southeast Asia, competing with SIN and BKK as regional hubs. MH joined Oneworld in 2013. Domestic network covers East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak) and Peninsular Malaysia cities. MH and JL codeshare on KUL-NRT/KIX routes.

Baggage

Weight-based system. Bags check through on Oneworld itineraries. MH and Firefly (regional subsidiary) do not always interline bags automatically. Domestic Malaysia flights have a 30kg economy allowance. Interline baggage works well with BA, QF, CX, and JL via KUL. MH does not interline with AirAsia (separate LCCT terminal at KUL).

Terminal Notes

KUL KLIA Terminal 1 is the full-service carrier terminal (separate from KLIA2 used by AirAsia). MH Golden Lounge at KLIA Satellite terminal with separate domestic and international sections. The Satellite terminal is connected to the Main terminal by an aerotrain. Regional lounges at Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. LHR: Terminal 3.

Operational Issues

MH has been through restructuring and operates a leaner network than its pre-2014 size. Monsoon season (November through March) can cause turbulence and delays on East Malaysia routes. Haze from regional forest fires (typically September-October) occasionally reduces visibility at KUL. MH retired its A380 fleet. Current long-haul fleet is A350 and A330. KUL does not have a curfew, allowing late-night scheduling flexibility.
