Operational notes

Hub and Connections

Hub is Manila Ninoy Aquino (MNL). Independent carrier (no alliance). Minimum connection time is 120 minutes at MNL (allow more due to terminal issues). Domestic network covers major Philippine islands. International routes to US (LAX, SFO, JFK, HNL), Middle East, Asia, Australia, and London. Key market is overseas Filipino worker traffic.

Baggage

Piece-based on international routes. US routes allow 2x23kg in economy. Domestic flights use weight-based system. Limited interline baggage agreements (no alliance). Some codeshare partners include ANA, Etihad. Connecting bags between domestic and international at MNL require recollection due to terminal separation.

Terminal Notes

MNL has four terminals with no airside connections between them. PAL uses Terminal 2 for international. Domestic flights operate from Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 depending on route. Terminal transfer requires exiting, taking a shuttle or taxi, and re-entering. This is the single biggest pain point for MNL connections. Allow at least 3 hours for inter-terminal connections. PAL Mabuhay Lounge available in Terminal 2.

Operational Issues

MNL is severely congested with limited runway capacity. Delays are frequent and often significant. Typhoon season (June-November) causes cancellations, especially to island destinations. PAL emerged from US Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2021. Fleet includes A350-900 and 777-300ER for long-haul, A321neo for medium-haul. Service quality is generally good but ground operations at MNL are challenging.
