Hub and Connections
Primary hubs: Sydney (SYD) and Melbourne (MEL). Secondary hubs at Brisbane (BNE) and Perth (PER). PER is the gateway for nonstop flights to Europe (QF9/QF10 to LHR) and Johannesburg. Minimum connection time at SYD is 60 minutes domestic-to-domestic, 90 minutes domestic-to-international. QF domestic terminal and international terminal at SYD are separate buildings connected by a shuttle bus (allow extra time). QF has a joint business with AA on transpacific and with Emirates on the Kangaroo Route.
Baggage
Weight-based system on most routes. Piece-based on routes to/from the Americas (2x23kg economy). Bags check through on Oneworld partner itineraries. QF-EK partnership allows bag check-through despite Emirates not being Oneworld. Domestic QF flights allow 30kg in economy. Jetstar (QF's low-cost subsidiary) does NOT interline bags with QF unless booked on a QF codeshare.
Terminal Notes
SYD: International Terminal 1 for international, Terminal 3 for domestic. The T1-T3 transfer requires a bus or train (allow 90+ minutes for connections). MEL: Terminal 1 domestic, Terminal 2 international. QF operates Qantas Lounges and premium Qantas First Lounges at SYD and MEL. LAX: Tom Bradley International Terminal. LHR: Terminal 3.
Operational Issues
SYD has a curfew from 11pm to 6am, which constrains scheduling and means late inbound flights cannot land. Fog at MEL causes delays, particularly in autumn and winter mornings. Bushfire smoke can disrupt operations at Australian airports during summer (December to February). QF runs a lean schedule on ultra-long-haul routes (SYD-LHR via PER, SYD-DFW, SYD-JFK) with limited frequency, so rebooking options after cancellations are tight.
