Hub and Connections
Hub at Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB). Minimum connection 90 minutes international. JNB is the primary gateway to southern Africa. SAA connects to major southern and East African cities. Cape Town (CPT) serves as a secondary base. SAA re-entered Star Alliance after its restructuring and restart. Network is smaller than pre-2020 but rebuilding. Baggage
Bags check through on Star Alliance itineraries. JNB baggage handling is generally reliable. Interline agreements with Star Alliance members. Airlink connections may require bag recheck depending on ticket type. Regional African airports may have manual handling and limited conveyor systems.
Terminal Notes
JNB Terminal A for international, Terminal B for domestic SAA. SLOW Lounge and SAA's own Cycad Lounge available. Star Alliance Gold gets lounge access. JNB is a large airport but well-organized with clear signage. International and domestic terminals are connected but require re-screening for transfers.
Operational Issues
SAA emerged from business rescue in 2021 and restarted with a limited network. Fleet is small (A340s retired, currently operating A330s and narrowbodies) with limited backup aircraft. Financial stability remains a concern under the Takatso consortium. JNB at 1,694m elevation reduces payload in hot weather. Thunderstorms common at JNB in summer (November-March) causing afternoon delays. SAA's long-haul network is a fraction of its former size.
