Hub and Connections
Hub at Lisbon (LIS). Minimum connection 60 minutes Schengen, 90 minutes non-Schengen. LIS is the closest European hub to the Americas and a strong connecting point for Brazil and West Africa. Porto (OPO) serves as a secondary base. TAP has the most flights between Europe and Brazil of any carrier. Good connections to Portuguese-speaking Africa (Luanda, Maputo, Sao Tome).
Baggage
Bags check through on Star Alliance itineraries. Discount fares have no checked bag. LIS baggage handling can be slow during peak summer months. Interline agreements with Star Alliance partners. TAP Express regional connections treated as mainline for baggage purposes.
Terminal Notes
LIS Terminal 1 for all TAP operations. The airport is aging and capacity-constrained. TAP Premium Lounge at LIS T1. The new Lisbon airport (Montijo) has been discussed for years but remains unbuilt. Terminal can feel overcrowded during peak departure banks. Star Alliance partners at LIS also use Terminal 1.
Operational Issues
LIS airport capacity constraints cause regular delays, especially in summer peak (June-September). TAP has had financial instability and ownership changes which have affected service consistency. Portuguese ATC strikes occasionally disrupt schedules. Fleet is mostly A320neo family and A330neo, both relatively new and reliable.
