Operational notes
Hub and Connections
Hub at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Minimum connection 90 minutes international. BKK is a key connecting point between Europe/Middle East and Southeast Asia/Australasia. Thai Smile (regional subsidiary) feeds domestic and short-haul traffic. Star Alliance partners operate from the same terminal. Good connections to Indochina destinations (Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar) via Thai Smile.
Baggage
Uses weight concept rather than piece concept on most routes. Bags check through on Star Alliance itineraries. Thai Smile connections treated as interline requiring bag recheck in some cases. BKK baggage handling is generally reliable. Interline agreements with all Star Alliance members.
Terminal Notes
BKK main terminal for all Thai Airways international. Royal Orchid Lounge available for business class and Star Alliance Gold. The airport can be congested during peak evening departure banks (22:00-01:00 European flights). Immigration queues at BKK can be long for arriving passengers, impacting connections that require landside transit.
Operational Issues
Thai Airways emerged from restructuring and has been rebuilding its network. Fleet renewal is ongoing so some routes have older aircraft. Monsoon season (May-October) causes occasional delays but rarely cancellations. Network is smaller than pre-2020 levels with some routes not yet restored. On-time performance has improved under the restructured operation.
