Turkish Airlines (TK) is a Star Alliance carrier flying to more countries than any other airline, using Istanbul as a hub connecting four continents.
- Star Alliance member serving more countries than any other airline worldwide
- Istanbul (IST) mega-hub connects Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia efficiently
- Strong option for reaching secondary African and Central Asian cities not served by other carriers
- Competitive business class with lie-flat seats and Turkish lounge experience
- Generous baggage allowances compared to most European carriers
Why this tier
Turkish Airlines flies to 356 destinations across 132 countries - more countries than any other airline - with a fleet of 516+ aircraft operating from its Istanbul (IST) hub. The carrier won the 2025 Skytrax award for World's Best Business Class Onboard Catering and carried a record 92.6 million passengers in 2025. As a Star Alliance member, TK is a top-tier connector for Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East, and secondary European cities that other major carriers skip.
Strengths
- Serves 132 countries - the most of any airline worldwide - with unmatched coverage across Africa (40+ African destinations) and Central Asia
- Istanbul hub provides single-stop connectivity between virtually any origin-destination pair across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East
- 2025 Skytrax Best Business Class Catering winner; dedicated onboard chefs on many long-haul flights
- New Crystal business suites (1-2-1, sliding privacy doors) rolling out on A350 and 787 widebodies through 2026
- Istanbul lounge consistently rated among the world's best, with complimentary access for business class and Star Alliance Gold

Watch-outs
- Older widebody cabins (777, A330) still use 2-2-2 business class layout with no direct aisle access - check aircraft type before booking premium fares
- Baggage handling complaints remain elevated, particularly on connections through IST; the U.S. DOT fined TK $1.3 million in January 2025 for refund delays and baggage compensation failures

Operational notes
Hub and Connections
Hub at Istanbul Airport (IST). Minimum connection 60 minutes domestic, 90 minutes international. IST is massive and walking distances between gates can exceed 20 minutes. Turkish flies to more countries than any other airline, making IST a global crossroads. Strong connections between Europe and Africa, Middle East, Central Asia. Star Alliance partners can connect through IST but transit visa not required for airside connections.
Baggage
Generous baggage allowance with 2x23kg included on most international economy fares. Bags check through on Star Alliance interline tickets. Turkish has interline agreements with many non-alliance carriers as well. IST baggage handling has improved since the airport opened in 2019 but mishandling still occurs during peak connecting waves.
Terminal Notes
IST is a single large terminal with multiple piers. Turkish Airlines Lounge (business class) is one of the largest airline lounges globally with dining, sleeping areas, and entertainment. Miles&Smiles Gold and Star Alliance Gold get lounge access. The airport has good duty-free but long walking distances. Automated people movers connect distant gates.
Operational Issues
IST fog and winter weather cause delays December through February. Heavy connecting bank structure means delays cascade across dozens of flights. Turkish operates very late-night/early-morning departures, so delays can push into curfew issues at destination airports. Strong operational growth has occasionally outpaced ground handling capacity.
