Hub and Connections
Major hubs at Newark (EWR), Houston (IAH), San Francisco (SFO), Chicago (ORD), Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), and Washington Dulles (IAD). EWR is the primary transatlantic gateway. SFO and LAX handle transpacific. IAH is strong for Latin America. Minimum connection times vary: EWR 90 minutes international, ORD 75 minutes, SFO 90 minutes international. Extensive domestic network with 370+ destinations feeds international.
Baggage
Bags check through on Star Alliance interline itineraries. Basic Economy fares have no full-size carry-on or checked bag. First checked bag $35 domestic economy (free on transatlantic/transpacific). United handles interline bags for all Star Alliance members at US hubs. EWR Terminal C baggage handling has been problematic during peak periods.

Operational Issues
EWR is one of the most delay-prone airports in the US due to airspace congestion, weather, and runway configuration. ORD winter weather causes significant December-February disruptions. SFO fog causes morning delays and ground stops, especially May-August. Summer thunderstorms at IAH and DEN affect afternoon banks. United has invested heavily in operational reliability and has improved materially since 2023.
