Key facts about this carrier

Vietnam Airlines (VN) is the flag carrier of Vietnam and a SkyTeam member, operating from dual hubs at Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

  • SkyTeam member since 2010 with hubs at Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN).
  • Primary international carrier for Vietnam with routes to Europe, Asia, and Australia.
  • Fleet includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s for long-haul service.
  • Key gateway airline for multi-stop itineraries through Southeast Asia.

Why this tier

Vietnam Airlines is a Skytrax 4-star carrier operating 144 aircraft (average age 13 years) across 60 destinations in 22 countries, with hubs at Hanoi Noi Bai and Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat. The SkyTeam member posted record revenue of VND 123 trillion (USD 4.7 billion) in 2025, carried 25.6 million passengers, and added 14 new international routes including Copenhagen, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Strengths

  • SkyTeam member with 60 destinations across 22 countries - strong intra-Asia and Europe-Asia connectivity
  • Record 2025 financials - VND 123 trillion revenue (+10% YoY), pre-tax profit of VND 8,168 billion
  • Major fleet modernization - USD 8.1 billion order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 (February 2026) plus up to 30 widebodies for 2028-2030 delivery
  • 1-2-1 lie-flat business class on both A350 and 787 with direct aisle access; Cirrus III seats on newer A350s
  • Aggressive international expansion - 14 new routes added in 2025, Amsterdam and Milan launches planned for 2026
  • Competitive pricing on Europe-Asia routes vs. Gulf carriers, particularly Hanoi/SGN to Paris, London, Frankfurt

Watch-outs

  • On-time performance of 70.3% for full-year 2025 is below industry average and significantly trails regional competitors
  • Mixed business class hard product - older Stelia Solstys seats on some A350s are noticeably inferior to newer Cirrus III; food reviews are inconsistent
  • Fleet average age of 13 years is high; 737 MAX and widebody deliveries do not begin until 2028-2030
  • 0.6% cancellation rate in 2025 is acceptable but combined with the low OTP creates reliability concerns

Best used for

  • Intra-Asia connections
  • Europe–Asia long-haul
  • Short regional hops
  • Australasia

Operational notes

Hub and Connections

SGN (Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat) and HAN (Hanoi Noi Bai) are dual hubs. HAN is the primary hub for routes to Northeast Asia and Europe. SGN handles more Southeast Asian and Oceania connections. MCT at HAN is 75 minutes, SGN is 90 minutes. Both airports have capacity constraints. SkyTeam partner connections available but limited partner presence at Vietnamese airports.

Baggage

Bags check through on SkyTeam interline itineraries. Intra-Vietnam domestic flights included as connections. Weight concept used on most Asian routes. Piece concept on Americas routes. Codeshare with Korean Air, Delta, and other SkyTeam members for bag check-through.

Terminal Notes

SGN has an international terminal (T2) and domestic terminal (T1) with no airside connection. HAN has T1 (domestic) and T2 (international) connected via walkway. Vietnam Airlines lounges (Lotus Lounge) at both airports. SGN is extremely congested with limited gate capacity. Long taxi times at SGN are common.

Operational Notes

SGN airport is severely capacity-constrained. Delays are frequent, especially during peak hours. Typhoon season (September through November) affects central Vietnam destinations (DAD, HUI, CXR). Summer thunderstorms cause afternoon/evening delays at both hubs. HAN can have fog delays in winter (December through February). Vietnam Airlines has been improving reliability but delays remain common.
