AI can draft a round the world route. It cannot reliably check that the route can be ticketed, and a human or custom built system like AirTreks still issues the ticket. The workflow that works is: AI drafts the route, AirTreks checks that there is availability in the desired classes, rules are followed, and then ticketed and issued.
What AI does well
Ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for a round the world route and you get something useful in seconds: which cities fit together, a sensible order, how long to stay in each. That is a head start in some ways. Bring it to us as it is.
Where an AI itinerary breaks
The draft looks like an itinerary. Three things decide whether it is a ticket.
1. A flight that exists is not a flight that books on your fare.
A round the world fare is built from specific booking classes. A nonstop can be on sale and still not available in the class your fare needs. Two real cases from our routing work:
- Sydney direct to New York looks obvious. On round the world fare classes it has essentially no bookability. Routed through Los Angeles on Qantas, the same trip sits around 80%, and a domestic flight to New York finishes it.
- Qatar Airways from Doha direct to Los Angeles books about 10% of the time on an alliance round the world fare. Doha to Hong Kong on Qatar (78%), then Hong Kong to Los Angeles on Cathay Pacific (68%), tickets.
(Both examples are published on our How AirTreks Works page, updated May 29, 2026.)
An AI assistant that has never priced a round the world fare cannot see this. It may draft the nonstop and unless it has access to availability and rules and more - it's unlikely to work. We have yet to see it work.
2. The number of legs changes the odds.
Our developer page states bookability measured from real bookings: 91% at 3 to 4 legs, 61% at 5 to 6, and 6% at 7 or more. Most AI itineraries run long, because more stops sounds better. Past seven legs, an alliance round the world ticket mostly stops being an option and the trip needs a custom build.
3. Some alliance members do not work on these fares.
Air India is a Star Alliance member with essentially no round the world fare inventory, and South African Airways is much the same. An AI route that leans on them looks fine on a map and fails at pricing.
Self-transfer: the cheap trap
When an AI cannot find one ticket for a multi-city trip, it often suggests booking each flight on its own, sometimes called self-transfer. It looks like one itinerary. It is not.
On separate tickets between airlines with no interline agreement, your bags are not checked through. You clear immigration, collect the bags, queue at a different desk and clear security again. If the first flight is late, the second airline owes you nothing and you rebook at your own cost. One ticket across cooperating carriers checks your bags through and makes the airline responsible for protecting your connection.
See why one ticket matters and how long a connection between separate tickets should be.
What a human and AirTreks AI adds
- Fare construction. A consultant picks which fare product fits the route (alliance round the world, circle fare, or custom multi-stop) and builds the price. Two trips to the same cities can price thousands of dollars apart.
- Ticketability checks before you commit. Dead legs, hub fixes and carriers that break on these fares, caught before ticketing, not at the airport.
- Real-world connections. Which layovers are makeable, not just legal.
- Someone to call when it changes. Airlines change schedules, often. On an 8 to 10 flight trip at least one change is likely. Your consultant rebooks across carriers.
- A price you see up front. AirTreks charges a service fee on top of the airfare, scaled to how complex the itinerary is, and you see the total before you commit.
Do you need us? When not to
If your AI draft is a round trip, a one-way, or three cities inside one region, try to book it yourself. When AirTreks is not the right fit explains where the line is: it is the number of oceans crossed, not the number of stops.
AirTreks tools an AI assistant can call
AirTreks publishes a free routing server that AI assistants and agent frameworks can connect to. It is described at airtreks.com/developers.
What that page says:
- It works over MCP (streamable HTTP) at
https://mcp.airtreks.com/mcp, with no authentication for the six routing tools. There is a plain REST option and an OpenAPI 3.1 spec athttps://mcp.airtreks.com/openapi.json. - The free tier is 100 requests a day per IP, no key.
- Six free tools:
plan_route(evaluates Star Alliance, oneworld and custom mixed-carrier builds and recommends one),route_validate(alliance rules, dead legs, poison carriers, bookability),route_suggest,hub_check,fare_product_match(RTW, Circle Pacific, Circle Atlantic, Open Jaw or Custom Multi-City) andcustom_route_build(breaks a complex itinerary into individually ticketable segments). - One handoff tool,
trip_idea_create, which passes the trip to an AirTreks human consultant with the routing analysis attached. It needs an API key. - The data behind it: 53 dead legs learned from 1,400+ real fare-construction failures, and the bookability numbers above.
In plain terms: your assistant can draft the route, run it through these checks, then hand it to a consultant to issue.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT book flights for me?
It can search and draft, and in some partner apps it may show live prices. For a multi-continent trip, it does not issue a round the world ticket, and it cannot confirm the fare rules behind your route.
Can AI find me a cheap round the world flight?
It can suggest routes and rough costs. It cannot see the round the world fares that are not sold through a consumer search box, and it will not catch a leg that fails to book. Treat its price as a guess until a fare is built. See what a round the world ticket costs.
Why can't AI just book each flight separately?
Perhaps it can - we are testing it daily and have our own AI agents that work off our data and processes built since 1987. If you do book on your own, you will likely lose the protection of one ticket: through-checked bags, a protected connection and one place to call. Self-transfer is cheap until a flight runs late. See one ticket vs separate tickets.
Can AI agents use AirTreks directly?
Yes. AirTreks runs a free MCP server and REST API with six routing tools and a handoff to a human consultant. Details are on the developers page.
How long does an AirTreks quote take?
TripPlanner returns an estimate from the algorithm in about 15 minutes. A consultant's quote comes back within a day. TripPlanner is free.
What should I give my AI to get a route that can be ticketed?
Tell it your start city, the order of continents, your dates, and that the trip has to be one ticket. Then ask it to keep to 5 or 6 flights. Expect to hand it to a person or input into our trip planner for the last step.
